Fullstory vs LogRocket vs Hotjar: Which Session Replay Tool Should You Choose?

Compare Fullstory, LogRocket, and Hotjar on replay, product analysis, debugging, website research, privacy, pricing, and team fit.

Three parallel workflows show Fullstory moving from behavioral signals to product and UX decisions, LogRocket moving from errors to engineering fixes, and Hotjar or Contentsquare moving from website problems to conversion-research hypotheses.

Replay and investigation workflows

Session replay reconstructs an experience from captured DOM, interaction, timing, and configuration data; it is not a literal video. Fidelity can break around canvases, WebGL, cross-origin iframes, shadow DOM, virtualized interfaces, cross-tab behavior, offline mobile flows, or resources that change after capture. Test the product on your real application rather than assuming a polished demo represents every route.

Fullstory connects detailed session evidence to Omnisearch, event and user filters, saved segments, funnels, heatmaps, Page Flow, and—on higher paid packages—Journeys and Retention Analysis. LogRocket makes technical evidence central: errors, source maps, stack traces, logs, requests, performance, releases, and AI issue workflows. Hotjar / Contentsquare connects replay to heatmaps, Attention Maps, funnels, direct feedback, surveys, and interview or test recruitment.

Treat replay as evidence, not intent

None establishes intent with certainty. A pause, repeated click, error, or abandonment can have several explanations. Correlate recordings with structured events, technical evidence, surveys, interviews, and user or account context. Use the guides to what session replay actually captures and reviewing session replays without watching random sessions.

Privacy, technical context, and implementation

Replay privacy depends on implementation. Fullstory’s Private by Default supports Exclude, Mask, and Unmask rules; network bodies require explicit allowlisting. LogRocket excludes password fields by default but requires deliberate sanitization for broader text, inputs, images, URLs, and network payloads. New Contentsquare accounts mask visible page text and numbers by default, while inputs and textareas are never captured; identity and custom fields still need review.

Before rollout, inventory credentials, free text, health and financial data, admin areas, support impersonation, network bodies, URL parameters, identifiers, consent, regions, retention, access, deletion, and export. Validate SPA navigation, iframes, mobile SDKs, source maps, sampling, and release tagging. A safe proof of concept checks both what appears and what must never appear.

Separate research from technical monitoring

Current Contentsquare has more technical monitoring than legacy Hotjar: Free and Growth include starter Error and Performance Monitoring, while full Experience Monitoring and Network Details require qualifying higher packages. That still is not the same workflow as LogRocket’s default technical diagnosis. Fullstory provides console and Dev Tools context plus network capture when enabled.

Which should you choose?

ChooseWhen it is the strongest fitValidate before signing
FullstoryYou need broad digital-experience analysis that connects replay with behavioral patterns and enterprise workflows.Capture rules, retention, mobile coverage, search limits, integrations, and quote terms.
LogRocketDevelopers need replay tied closely to errors, logs, network evidence, performance, and debugging context.Privacy filtering, diagnostic payloads, supported platforms, alerting, and ingestion cost.
HotjarProduct or research teams prioritize heatmaps, feedback, surveys, interviews, and accessible qualitative research.Recording limits, response allowances, collaboration needs, retention, and Contentsquare packaging.

Decision rule: use a Fullstory pilot for experience analysis, a LogRocket pilot for technical diagnosis, or a Hotjar pilot for research workflows; test masking and evidence quality in the exact routes that matter.

Where Hymetry fits

Hymetry is account-centric product intelligence for B2B SaaS. It begins with a grouped-page or product-area signal, then the affected company, contributing users, and relevant Visits. That account-to-session path is narrower than Fullstory’s experience platform, less technically detailed than LogRocket’s observability, and different from Contentsquare’s surveys and conversion research.

Hymetry is newer, has a smaller ecosystem and fewer integrations, has no established independent review score, and has less advanced developer observability than LogRocket. It is a complementary or narrower option when the central question is which customer account changed, who contributed, and which visits contain evidence—not a replacement for the three products’ distinctive jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Which is best for product UX research?

Fullstory is usually the strongest starting point for authenticated-product UX research. Hotjar / Contentsquare is stronger when website heatmaps, feedback, surveys, and interviews form the workflow.

Which is best for frontend debugging?

LogRocket provides the deepest default engineering workflow across replay, console, network, errors, source maps, stacks, performance, and releases.

Which is best for landing pages?

Hotjar / Contentsquare is the strongest default because it combines heatmaps, replay, funnels, surveys, feedback, and research recruitment. Keep an attribution system for traffic-source and campaign analysis.

Which supports mobile apps?

Fullstory supports mobile through an add-on; LogRocket documents iOS, Android, React Native, and Flutter; Contentsquare has a broader mobile platform. Verify the exact package and framework.

Which has a free plan?

Fullstory and Contentsquare have permanent free plans. LogRocket advertised a 14-day trial rather than a permanent free tier at verification.

Can these replace product analytics?

They overlap through funnels and behavioral analysis, but do not automatically replace a mature event model, canonical metrics, retention and cohorts, experimentation, or warehouse workflows.

Disclosure: Hymetry publishes this comparison and is mentioned only where account-centric B2B product usage and session evidence are relevant. Product capabilities, prices, ratings, packaging, and ownership are verified against linked sources and may change after publication.

Methodology: This comparison used public sources available on , prioritizing official product, documentation, pricing, privacy, implementation, and release material; then G2; then independent review and video material for workflow context. No hands-on laboratory test was performed, so replay fidelity should be validated in the buyer’s application.

Hotjar transition caveat

Hotjar transition caveat: Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare; new evaluators sign up for Contentsquare, legacy accounts may remain, the new tag is required, legacy data does not migrate, packaging is modular, and the two G2 profiles represent different samples.
