| Main limitation | No surveys and less depth | Fragmented current and legacy boundaries | Cost, configuration, learning curve, account modeling |
Ownership matters: Hotjar Ltd. Malta merged into Contentsquare Group on July 1, 2025. New customers use the current Contentsquare suite, while legacy insights.hotjar.com accounts and documentation may still exist.
The same replay, three different starting corners
Microsoft Clarity
Free visual behaviour
Hotjar and Contentsquare
Website research and direct feedback
Fullstory
Advanced product and UX investigation
All three do replay and heatmaps. Their strongest workflows begin in different corners: look at it for free, ask the visitor, or investigate it systematically. Editorial positioning — not a calculated score.
Decision by scenario
| Scenario | Start with | Likely companion | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small marketing site needing free heatmaps | Microsoft Clarity | GA4 or attribution tool | No native survey; validate replay availability and fidelity |
| Ecommerce conversion research | Hotjar / Contentsquare | Ecommerce analytics and experiments | Experience Analytics and Voice of Customer price separately |
| B2B SaaS product design | Fullstory | Product and account analytics | Company adoption needs another model |
| Direct website feedback | Hotjar / Contentsquare | Traffic analytics | Research and replay allowances vary by plan |
| Basic free mobile replay | Microsoft Clarity | Error monitoring | Test target SDK, masking, and fidelity |
| Advanced support and engineering investigation | Fullstory | Observability and support desk | Not a replacement for traces or full APM |
Replay, research, and product analysis
Replay reconstructs an experience from captured interface state and events; it is not literal video and does not reveal intent, attention, emotion, satisfaction, or cause. Fidelity can vary with SPAs, iframes, canvases, WebGL, shadow DOM, cross-tab behavior, mobile frameworks, resources, masking, sampling, and retention. Test the real application before committing.
Clarity is strongest when free aggregate behavioral evidence is enough: recordings, filters, Smart Events, and several heatmap types. Hotjar / Contentsquare is strongest when website behavior should feed surveys, widgets, zone analysis, funnels, or journey research. Fullstory is strongest when teams select sessions from behavioral segments, users, funnels, journeys, frustration signals, or reported problems and then inspect console, network, and performance context.
Distinguish current Contentsquare packaging
Current Contentsquare separates Experience Analytics, Voice of Customer, and Product Analytics. Free includes basic replay, heatmaps, funnels, errors, performance, and surveys; zone heatmaps, Journey Analysis, impact work, and extended history begin higher. Product Analytics is a separate deeper cross-session product. Fullstory’s Guides and Surveys are also a paid add-on, not an included free research suite.
Privacy and implementation
“Free” and “masked by default” do not remove consent, configuration, or legal review. Clarity provides Strict, Balanced, and Relaxed masking plus selector controls; route and identity hygiene remain necessary. Contentsquare offers suppression, masking, exclusions, user-data tools, and plan-dependent governance. Fullstory’s Private by Default supports Exclude, Mask, and Unmask rules plus URL and network privacy controls.
Inventory credentials, free text, personal and sensitive data, internal admin routes, support impersonation, query strings, console values, request and response bodies, identifiers, consent states, regions, retention, access, deletion, export, and subprocessor implications. Verify not only what the replay shows, but what it must never show.
Plan implementation and migration
Implementation also includes SPA route naming, custom events or tags, identity, company properties, internal-traffic exclusion, sampling, recording quotas, error and performance context, mobile frameworks, source changes, dashboards, and ownership. Migration between products rarely preserves recordings, historical heatmaps, old segments, identity merges, or legacy Hotjar data automatically.
Pricing and customer ratings
Microsoft Clarity
No paid tier or traffic-priced upgrade path. Aggregate analytics have no traffic-priced cap, but replay availability is limited to up to 100,000 sessions per project per day and is not guaranteed for every session.
Full replay lasts 30 days; after that 1% or 10 recordings daily, whichever is higher, may remain up to nine months. Favorites and heatmap data can remain up to nine months.
Hotjar / Contentsquare
Free listed 200,000 monthly analytics sessions, one project, 5% replay capture up to 10,000, and up to 100 monthly survey responses with three active surveys or widgets.
Experience Analytics Growth started at $49 monthly billed annually; Voice of Customer Growth at $99. Pro, Enterprise, and Product Analytics were sales-led. Product Analytics history was internally inconsistent across page sections, so confirm it in the contract.
Fullstory
FullstoryFree listed 30,000 sessions monthly, 10 seats, 5,000 server events, and one year of replay and product-analytics retention. Mobile and several advanced capabilities are excluded.
Business, Advanced, and Enterprise use custom pricing; mobile, Guides and Surveys, StoryAI, and other capabilities can be add-ons. Review the free-plan data-rights terms as a contract point.
Pricing is an August 6, 2026 snapshot. “No traffic limits” does not mean every recording is retained. Confirm capture, retention, projects, responses, seats, mobile, add-ons, exports, and contract terms.

G2 is the single common rating source. Counts are rounded snapshots and different review volumes, product eras, plans, roles, and use cases make the averages unsuitable as a ranking.
Which should you choose?
| Choose | When it is the strongest fit | Validate before signing |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | You need a no-cost starting point for heatmaps and replay before funding a broader research stack. | Sampling and retention behavior, masking, supported platforms, exports, and whether free evidence is deep enough. |
| Hotjar | Research teams need replay and heatmaps alongside feedback, surveys, and user-research workflows. | Capture and response allowances, collaboration, retention, add-ons, and current Contentsquare packaging. |
| Fullstory | You need deeper digital-experience analysis, behavioral search, and enterprise governance around replay evidence. | Quote terms, search and retention limits, mobile coverage, privacy configuration, and integration fit. |
Decision rule: start with Clarity for low-cost orientation, Hotjar for qualitative research, or Fullstory for deeper experience analysis; validate the same masked routes and investigation tasks before deciding.
Where Hymetry fits
Hymetry becomes relevant when the question moves from “what happened in this session?” to which customer Companies adopted a product area, which Users contributed, whether usage is broad or champion-concentrated, and which Visits explain an account signal.
It can complement Clarity’s free heatmaps, Contentsquare’s surveys and feedback, or Fullstory’s technical replay. It does not replace those distinctive workflows, detailed engineering observability, or marketing attribution. Hymetry is newer, with a smaller ecosystem, fewer integrations, no mature independent rating, and narrower research tooling.
Frequently asked questions
Is Microsoft Clarity better than Hotjar?
Clarity is better when free recordings and heatmaps are enough. Hotjar / Contentsquare is better when observed behavior must connect to surveys, feedback, and richer website research.
Which is genuinely free?
Clarity is the clearest genuinely free product: Microsoft publishes no paid tier. Contentsquare and Fullstory have free plans with capture, retention, response, feature, project, or seat boundaries.
Which has surveys and feedback?
Hotjar / Contentsquare has the most complete website workflow through Voice of Customer. Fullstory offers Guides and Surveys as a paid add-on. Clarity has no native survey product.
Which is best for an authenticated SaaS app?
Fullstory is usually the strongest starting point because it connects replay with users, properties, events, segments, funnels, journeys, console, and network evidence. Add an account model for multi-user companies.
Can these replace product analytics?
Not automatically. Clarity is lighter, Contentsquare sells Product Analytics separately, and Fullstory has substantial behavior analysis but may still need a warehouse or dedicated platform for trusted metrics, experiments, financial data, or account rollups.
Can replay reveal why a user struggled?
Replay reveals observable behavior and supports hypotheses. It cannot directly reveal intent or cause. Validate with errors, structured analysis, direct feedback, usability tests, interviews, or experiments.
Sources
Disclosure: Hymetry publishes this comparison and is mentioned only where account-centric B2B product analytics and session evidence are relevant. Product capabilities, prices, ratings, packaging, ownership, and videos are verified against linked sources and may change after publication.
Methodology: Research and verification were completed . Official pricing, product, privacy, retention, access, and implementation material took priority; G2 supplied a common rating source; recent reviews and official videos supplied secondary workflow context. No hands-on comparative deployment was performed. G2 counts were rounded and cross-checked against indexed pages because direct pages presented an automated-access screen during the final check.
Comparison evidence limits
Unknown or contract-dependent capabilities remain labeled. “Supported” does not imply equal fidelity across frameworks. Technical privacy controls are not binary legal-compliance judgments. The fictional B2B scenario in the original research represented no Hymetry customer, benchmark, or measured result.
